Why are basements uncommon in Irish homes? I've noticed that most Irish homes don't have basements adn I was wondering why that is. Is it zoning or just standards? Is it difficult to get planning permission for basements? I should add that I live in Seattle, so I understand the concerns about rain and being close to sea level, but that doesn't seem to deter anyone here from adding basements.
Why are most new houses in the Seattle area built w/out basements? In British Columbia (same geography & climate) where I live new houses have basements. They even blasted bedrock to put mine in. In Seattle there are many neighborhoods with so-called McMansions (Buchan, etc.) but none of them have basements. Isn't this weird? Wouldn't that space be useful? I find this especially bizarre in new homes and townhomes where basement space would make an essentially cramped space more livable (room for a family room, guest bedroom, etc.) Any ideas?
In what US cities do houses not have basements? I currently live in St. Louis and was planning to move to Dallas, when I was shocked to find that houses there do not have basements. So it made me wonder how many other cities have houses with no basements.
In what area of Texas can one find the most homes with BASEMENTS? I understand that basements in homes in Texas are rare. However, I WANT A BASEMENT. Due to some areas near the sea level, such as the gulf coast, I can understand why there are no basements, since the basement would flood. But why no basements in other areas? How can I find a community in Texas that DOES have basements or where in Texas can I go to buy land and have a house built WITH a basement?
How are buildings with basements demolished? I saw a photo of vacant lots in a very poor downtown neighborhood of Gary, Indiana, where huge buildings that had once housed big department stores (with full basements) had been torn down. I'm curious about how this is done, especially on the cheap: Is debris (bricks, plaster, etc.) from torn-down buildings ever buried to fill the hole, or is there nothing but dirt under these fields and parking lots? Kind of a silly question -- but I can't imagine where an impoverished city would get tons of dirt from, and I'm wondering if they simply pulled the buildings down and covered everything with dirt -- if that's ever done.
Can anyone tell me anything about wood basements? We are looking at a house to purchase and it has a wood basement. Where I am from, basements are always concrete. What kind of life does a wood basement have? What potential issues are there? Will they rot and have to be replaced?
Do they still build houses without basements nowadays? This is kind of a shocker to me. I was browsing real estate listings in Lafayette, Louisiana, and ran across a house that's only 2 years old, but doesn't have a basement. I didn't know they still built them without basements. Who would want such a house?

Why are there no basements in houses in Southern California? I have no idea why I cannot find a place with a basement! I don't want to hear answers that use earthquakes as an excuse. There are PLENTY of high rises in So Cal and I wouldn't want to be on the 24th floor when one hits. Yet there are plenty of high rises.
Why are basements the safest place to be during a storm? Everyone keeps telling me that basements are the best place to be during a storm but I can't understand why. If trees fall on the house wouldn't you get crushed if you are in the basement? I would think that standing near a door would be the best spot because you could escape easily if the house is about to fall down. I'm not talking about tornadoes. I'm just talking about severe storms.

How do you get rid of spiders and other common bugs found in basements? So I just moved into my first home and forgot from my parent's home how many bugs are in the basement. I am finding spiders of course and other bugs. So my questions is how do you get rid of these bugs ON YOUR OWN? It is not a big problem where I have to get a bug exterminator involved, so if you have any home remedies I would appreciate it. My Mom says pour baking soda down along the baseboards but I have 2 cats and a small dog and this can get messy. So please give any ideas that would be helpful. Thank you so much and have a great day.
Do most homes in southern California have basements? I want to move to Oceanside, CA and I'm wondering if houses with 1200-1500 sq. ft. selling for $500,000 have basements as well, which might increase the square footage substantially. So far I've just looks at houses over the internet. I thought I remembered hearing somewhere that most houses in so. Cal. didn't have basements.
Do most houses in Ireland have basements? About 10 years ago a friend and I hitchhiked throughout Ireland, and one fellow who picked us up was a builder or contractor. I'm pretty sure that I recall during our conversation that he said that most houses in Ireland do not have basements, but I cannot remember why. Does anyone know if this is true or not? And if it is true, what's the reason?
Can guinea pigs live in unfinished basements? I REALLY want a piggy but it would have to live in the unfinished basement! I know a lot about them, but that's the one thing I cannot seem to find any information about! Could you please help me? Okay, if I can't leave them in the WARM basement (there is a huge heater and it is hotter down there than upstairs), where can I put them? I can't put them in my room, or any other place! PLEASE help!
Can rigid foam insulation be installed in basements underneath or before strapping? I saw on HGTV, Holmes on homes, they insulated the basement walls and floor. But I noticed that it hadn't been strapped or studded yet. They glued the panels on and taped all corners and seams. It looked like a good way to seal the area. But how would you strap and drywall that? You cant just glue and screw the strapping to the 2'' foam can you?
How come houses in the south do not have basements? I live in Michigan and almost every house has a basement. When I went to Charlotte to visit a friend I noticed nobody had a basement. Then when I went to visit my sister and her husband in Texas I noticed that nobody had a basement. This has been driving me nuts because I can't find the answer, please help!
Why don't they build more basements in tornado states? I know basements are not a standard in many states in the country. But if having a basement or storm shelter would save your life in tornados, why wouldn't basements/storm shelters be mandatory in tornado-prone states? I could never figure that out.
Why don't new build houses in the UK have basements? Seeing as land is so expensive, why don't builders dig down and add basements to new build houses in the uk. Is it becuase a) its too expensive, b) the only land left is poisonous landfill and/or floodplain, c) plain greed on the developers part?
